“Alvin”

I’d never seen anything like it, a bunch of guys who weren’t preachers talking about God all the time…

I had traveled up to Washington, DC with Alvin, the insurance salesman who visited our home a few weeks earlier…

Turns out, he and a group of other men in the same church were in business together.

I was there for a couple of weeks living in an apartment above their office…

Alvin introduced me to his family, taught me about their business, and took me to church.

It was an amazing experience, but there was something weird about them:

2 or 3 times a week, they’d have these business meetings where they’d pray, in “tongues.”

Listen, I know it’s in the Bible, but it’s a little weird when it happens in real life…

You should know, I grew up “multi-denominational.”

Mama was AME (African Methodist Episcopal), my father was Baptist, and we went to the United Church of Christ because it was right down the street…

I had three completely different experiences of God, was baptized twice, and came to believe one simple thing:

“Jesus loves me, this I know…”

So, back to the “tongues” thing:

I’d heard about those holiness people who stayed in church all day “praying in the Spirit,” but I’d never seen it up close, until…

One afternoon, they invited me to their business meeting.

That’s how it happened, all of a sudden, I got filled with the Spirit, and started speaking in tongues too, in a business meeting!

I know, I know, a whole bunch of people don’t believe in this sort of thing, and writing about it, probably puts on me on the kook list…

Look, I didn’t believe it either, until it happened.

That whole experience with Alvin and his crazy band of Holy Spirit salesmen saved my life.

If he had not shown up when he did, I’m certain my life would have gone in a very different direction.

He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself…

And, more importantly, he was willing to take the risk, to reach out, to make a difference.

Everyone, at some point in their lives, needs an Alvin.

In the community, at work, in life.

There have been many Alvin’s in my life over the years, each one showing up at just the right time…

Who was or is the Alvin in your life?

Leave a comment with their first name as a public “thank you” for the difference they’ve made…

One more thing, who can you be an Alvin to in their life?

When you see that person, when you feel that inner prompting, I hope you will take the time if only an hour or two for lunch…

Never doubt the lifetime of difference one caring person can make, I’m living proof.

Thank you Alvin.

With love and respect,

Ramon Williamson

P.S. Go ahead, share this post, and leave a comment on Facebook with the first name of a person who has made a difference in your life…

P.P.S. Next week, how I discovered my “kryptonite” and why it’s critical you discover yours…
